Dharma Diet – Post #1
Something happened to me recently that I am still having trouble explaining, even to myself. Over the past month or so, I’ve lost 15 pounds without hardly trying. I do not exaggerate when I say that it has been one of the easiest things I’ve ever done. I really think I’ve discovered something so simple, something right there in front of me all this time, but which I only recently could see.
But before I get into that, I need to back up to provide a little context.
History of Failed Weight Loss
Right around 24 years ago (the same age as my firstborn), I gained about 20 pounds of what some call “sympathy weight.” That’s the so-called weight that husbands gain at the same time their wives are pregnant with child. More accurately, I think sympathy weight is merely weight gain by the father-to-be eating and drinking to excess as he deals with the stress of impending fatherhood.
At any rate, I gained at least 20 pounds then, and I have struggled unsuccessfully to lose it ever since. As a short guy of 5’5″ I have been overweight all these years, averaging about 170-175 pounds, sometimes reaching as high as 185. The experts suggest that someone of my height should weigh between 135-145, certainly no more than 150. So yeah, I was overweight, even flirting with obesity, depending on your definition of obesity.
I have tried all manner of dieting over these 24 years, sometimes my own versions, sometimes fad diets. I tried various forms of exercise as well, from jogging to swimming to walking to weightlifting. All with little success. Once I was able to hit 160 but then I quickly gained it back.
You, or someone you know, can probably relate to this scenario.
However, just this past August, on the 18th to be exact, I was listening to a YouTube audio recording of a seminar given by the late Wayne Dyer. Dyer was a motivational/spiritual guru popular in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. Somewhere in this long 5+ hour recording, Dyer was talking about his own weight loss attempts. Some things he said struck me profoundly and instantly, and something inside me just clicked. In what I can only call an instant moment of enlightenment, something shifted inside of me.
Mind you, I was already in dieting mode (yet again) at the time I was listening to Dyer. But after my so-called moment of enlightenment, I knew of some changes I wanted to make to my diet right then and there. The strange thing was that I somehow simply knew that THIS TIME it was going to work.
That’s the part I’m still trying to figure out, why THIS TIME feels different. I feel so confident in this, however, that I’ve decided that I want to publish this periodical “Dharma Diet Log” so that I can share what I feel certain is a a dieting and weight loss breakthrough.
When I started this diet, on August 18, 2019, I weighed 172. Today I weigh 157. That’s 15 pounds in about 3 1/2 weeks. And if you noticed, I’ve already surpassed my previous best weight-loss effort by 3 pounds.
My ultimate goal is to lose 25 pounds, which will get me down to 147, a number I previously would have never dared to dream of reaching.
More to come…
